2013 Portsmouth Brewery homebrew Comp winner...

Hey all,

I wanted to let you know how the Home Brew taste out went.  The beer judging took two rounds to select a winner.  The professional pallets that were used for this were Dave Yarrington and JT Thompson from Smuttynose as well as Matt Gallagher, Tyler Sildve and myself from Portsmouth Brewery.  The beers were separated into one of five categories; Light/Easy Drinking style, Hefe/Wheat beer, Belgian style beer, Dark beer and Pale Ale/IPA.  We went though all the beers in each category in that order so not to blow our palates. After we made it through all 49 beers (one guy e-mailed me saying that his batch got infected so he didn’t submit it) we had 15 beers that made it to the second round.

The official break down was of how many beers made it to the second round was…

4 from the Light category,
3 from the Wheat style,
1 from the Belgian,
3 from the Dark and
4 from the IPA/Pale ale.

So after all that we went though our notes and had to re-taste a few of them to make sure our notes were correct.  After all of us talked we came to the unanimous decision that the winner was……

Kate Rodgers who brewed a 5.8% Chocolate Cherrywood Smoked Porter

Thanks to everyone who submitting beers it was a fun trying all the beers.  Keep a look out for Kate's Chocolate Cherrywood Smoked Porter to hit the taps in the next couple of months!

Cheers,
Tyler

Cluster's Pub crawl...

Hey all,

I hope you make it down to the Jimmy Lapanza Lounge to try the Smuttynose and Stone Brewery collaboration beer, Cluster's Last Stand.  It looks like they bumped up the abv a bit on this batch in comparison to the original Clusters brewed here at P-brew 2 years ago.

Looking forward to see how the beer was scaled up on the bigger system!

Cheers,
Tyler

Summer beer festivals....

Hey all,

Hope all the people that got to experience the Vermont Brewers Festival this year enjoyed our beers, even with the hour evacuation on Friday!  The summer Festival season is always a fun time for us.  If you missed us at Vermont last weekend check out the Southern New Hampshire brew fest in Hooksett that is going on this weekend.  We are bringing our Portsmouth Pale Ale, ESB and the last time you will be able to taste the Strawberry-Rhubarb Berlinerweisse.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers,
Tyler

Strawberry-Rhubarb Berliner Weisse..

Hey all,

So the new beer that I am excited about that just hit the taps is the Strawberry-Rhubarb Berliner Weisse.  The Berliner Weisse is a hazy, light bodied, sour wheat ale made in northern Germany.  Traditionally they are served with some syrup added to them to help "cut" the sourness and make them very quaffable.  So we took in all this into account when we made our version of this beer.  The Rhubarb adds a nice layer of sour to complement the wild yeast used, then we added some Strawberry Puree to the fermenter during secondary to add just the touch of sweetness upfront to help balance out the tartness of the finish.  this is a perfect summer beer that you really should try.

Cheers,
Tyler

Home Brew taste out...

Hey all,

So July 4th is a busy time here at the Portsmouth Brewery.  Those of you who came in to drop off your home brew submissions over that week got to see us at our peak of service helping all the people that walked through the door.  From all the E-mails that i found in my blocked spam folder this morning (i am not srue why they went there) I should have let you guys know this earlier.

I have put togetheor a group of brewers from both Portsmouth Brewery and Smuttynose who will be doing a competition style tasting next Thursday.  I am hoping that our taste buds will stay intact long enough to select a winner that day.  But, looking at all the great submissions we got we might have to sit down on anoher date for the best of show taste out.   More to come after next Thursday tasting on this subject...

Cheers,
Tyler
